The mission is simple. Create harmony. We do this by the safe and happy transfer of musical knowledge from one generation to the next.
The student leads the way with love and we build the curriculum around whatever musical curiosity is top of mind. Around this we weave music theory so that we can understand the language as well as enjoy the playing.
Grades absolutely come into this however, that's for sport and if we fancy the challenge. Some students will love the graded system and we teach the ABRSM syllabus at Double Choir.
I will absolutely encourage all students to do music theory grades 1-5. For students who do Music for their GCSE, this is expected.
Anna Markland - 'Professor Emeritus' (Anthony's Piano teacher!)
Alexander Campkin - 'Professor Emeritus - Composition' and advanced music theory grades 6+ (Anthony Composition teacher!)
Anthony Dowlatshahi - Head of School, Professor of Piano, Singing and Composition
Natasha Alexander - Teacher - Piano and French Horn
Monica Nelson - Teacher Piano and Head of Musical Mayhem
Whatever your persuasion or pronoun, I operate a safe-space where you can enjoy piano lessons with an ally.
There are many of us born into a world in which 'neurodiversity' wasn't a thing. We have had to carry our challenges and learn to adapt.
I prefer to see any kind of neurodiversity as a gift which can be channelled to help produce 'high-functioning', self-aware people who have the potential to achieve great things in life. Piano classes are one of many vehicles to help realise ambition and capability.
The practice of music is one of many disciplines that can help to bring out the best, and to create a culture of 'I can do this in spite of' VS 'I can't do this because of'.
Music is non-judgemental, and whatever / wherever your journey in life, my hope is that Double Choir can help to you to create harmony within yourself and for others.
